Agricultural Trade Liberalization and Economic Growth: Is there a connection in Sub-Saharan Africa?

Abstract: This paper investigates the agricultural sector role into the African economic development process. These last years, several studies examined the contribution of agriculture to the economic growth of the less developed countries or the developing countries. We build on these empirical works to undertake a comparative analysis of the linkage between agricultural trade liberalization and economic growth in SSA. We use Panel data analysis to examine the long-run structural relationships between agricultural trade liberalization and economic growth. The results support the claim that agricultural growth through trade liberalization is a major determinant to economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.
