THE ROLE FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP PLAYS IN PRODUCING ECONOMICS PH.D.S FROM LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES

Robert Lemke ()

Regional and Sectoral Economic Studies, 2012, vol. 12, issue 3

Abstract: This paper investigates how faculty scholarship by economics professors at elite liberal arts colleges in the United States is related to the rate at which college graduates eventually earn a Ph.D. in economics. On the surface it appears that faculty scholarship is strongly and positively correlated with producing Ph.D. students. Using a multi-variable regression model that includes several college characteristics, however, what really drives the production of Ph.D. students is enrolling high ability students.
