EL FRACASO DE LAS TENTATIVAS EXPORTADORAS EN LA INDUSTRIA AUTOMOTRIZ ARGENTINA ENTRE 1960 Y 1976

Abstract: En este artículo analizamos las primeras experiencias de exportación de la industria automotriz argentina que se realizaron entre la década del ’60 y principios de los ‘70. Para ello tomamos en consideración tanto la política gubernamental como la estrategia empresarial y nos centramos en las determinaciones económicas que impedían que las mismas prosperen. Encontramos que el fracaso de las tentativas exportadoras se ha encontrado relacionado, principalmente, con el problema de los costos internos dados por la escala de producción de las firmas locales y su baja productividad. Para analizar este problema, realizamos una comparación con la industria a nivel mundial y, en especial, con Brasil, el principal competidor regional.

This article examines the early experiences of Argentina automotive export industry at the '60s and early '70s. We consider both government policy and business strategy and focus on the economic determinations that prevented them thrive. We found that the failure of the attempts to export were associated mainly with the problem of internal costs given by the scale of production of local firms and its low productivity. To analyze this problem, we make a comparison with industry worldwide, especially with Brazil, the main regional competitor.
