DESCOMPOSICIÓN ESPACIAL Y SECTORIAL DE LA DESIGUALDAD. EL CASO DE ECUADOR

Abstract: Este trabajo examina la descomposición espacial y sectorial de la desigualdad en Ecuador a partir de la información que proporciona la última Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos de Hogares (ENIGHUR) realizada por el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (INEC). En un contexto de crecimiento económico y de reducción de la desigualdad, compartido por las economías del entorno, los resultados obtenidos muestran una mayor contribución de las disparidades sectoriales que de las disparidades provinciales, así como una contribución conjunta que supone entre un diez y un treinta por ciento, en función de las variables y medidas empleadas. El empleo de medidas alternativas afecta también a la evolución observada en la desigualdad global y sugiere que la mejora en la situación de los menos favorecidos no ha contado con la contribución de los más afortunados.

This paper examines the regional and sectoral decomposition of inequality in Ecuador using the more recent household income and expenditure national survey (ENIGHUR) conducted by the National Statistical Office (INEC). In a context of favourable trends of both growth and inequality, also observed in other countries of the region, the results obtained shows a relevance of sectoral disparities greater than that of regional disparities and a joint contribution ranging from ten to thirty percent, depending of the variables and measures employed. The use of alternative measures also affects the inequality trends and it suggests that the improvement of the poorest cannot be attributed to the contribution of the wealthiest.
