A STUDY OF FINLAND’S EXPERIENCE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FOREST INDUSTRY

Sergey O. Medvedev and Mikhail A. Zyryanov

Regional and Sectoral Economic Studies, 2024, vol. 24, issue 2, 41-52

Abstract: Modern forestry is a synthesis of scientific achievements in economics, technology and nature management. The Russian forestry industry is significantly inferior to some foreign analogues. Considerable efforts to modernize a number of complex internal processes are required to improve its efficiency. To achieve more effective and faster changes it is possible to use the accumulated world experience in the development of the forest industry. The paper is devoted to studying such experience gained in the leading forestry country - Finland. The paper uses the classical research methods aimed at the analysis of the historical stages, the elements of the state regulation and the statistical indicators of the industry. The main results include the identification of the most important aspects that need to be changed in the Russian forest industry and can be transformed on the basis of the experience gained in Finland. The key elements to be developed are deep processing and maximum utilization of all woody biomass resources. From the point of view of scientific innovations, one of the important findings is the need for the forest industry to become more independent and responsible not only for the economy, but also for the environment and society. Thus, an important element of the modern development of the Russian forest industry should be, by analogy with Finland, the increase of the social responsibility of business. The Finnish experience is an argument in favor of the application of the principles of sustainable development in the forest industry. This allows not only to achieve environmental and social sustainability, but also to increase the economic efficiency of production. The Finnish experience is an important element in the development of the forest industry both in Russia and in other countries developing this industry.
