Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of characteristics and types of resources of companies on types of their strategic alliances. This study which is a prior study of an empirical study which will be conducted in the near future has a limited theoretical scope. The two proposals of this study is as follows, (1) Resource characteristics of a company affects its strategic alliance type; (2) Resource types of a company affects its strategic alliance type. Findings of this paper are as follows, (1) Companies which have strategic alliances would like to have resources which have imperfect mobility, imperfect imitability, imperfect substitutability to gain competitive advantages. Companies which want to get the advantage of strategic alliance and protect their critical resources could prefer property-based resources; (2) Property-based resources can be more exploited than knowledge-based resources. Thus, when companies have or would like to have both property-based resources and knowledge-based resources, they could prefer equity-based strategic alliances; (3) Companies which have strategic alliances evaluate all of their resources. Thus, they can be dominant in strategic alliances.
