Apple's Critique: Curriculum, Ideology, and Teacher Attrition in Contemporary Education

Abstract: This article explores Michael Apple's perspectives on the official curriculum and their implications for teacher attrition. Drawing on Apple's critical theory of education, it examines how ideological and economic forces shape curriculum content and pedagogical practices in ways that can contribute to teacher burnout and attrition. The analysis focuses on four key themes: the hidden curriculum and social reproduction, deskilling of teachers through standardised curricula, neoliberal influences on education policy, and possibilities for teacher resistance and agency. By synthesising Apple's work with current research on teacher attrition, this article aims to illuminate the complex relationships between curriculum, ideology, and the teaching profession.
