Abstract:
•The performative aspect of suffering in religious tourism is often overlooked.•This note proposes the concept of endurance rituals performed on sacred journeys.•These rituals involve purposeful and voluntary discomfort inflicted upon oneself.•The discomfort associated may be either corporeal or (and) psychological.•Endurance rituals vary in terms of intensity, performance type and personal beliefs.
