Age or generation? Understanding behaviour differences

Bob McKercher

Annals of Tourism Research, 2023, vol. 103, issue C

Abstract: This paper argues that Age-Period-Cohort theory offers a much more robust explanation of changes in tourist behaviour over time than the traditional Generation Cohort Theory model. The study conducted a systematic examination of contemporary literature of the travel attitudes, motives and behaviours of four generations of 20 somethings and identified far more similarities than differences, with most differences attributable to period effects.
