•Relationship between perceived tourist image and information sources is analysed.•It was aimed to detect image fragmentation in the projected image.•593 questionnaires were used to measure perceived image through photo elicitation.•Emitted image fragmentation has effects on tourist perceived image of a destination.•Number and type of information sources influence tourist’s destination knowledge.
