•For a long time German youth hostels had an intimate atmosphere.•Hostel parents played a significant role in creating this intimate atmosphere.•In the 1970s, when hostels grew bigger, hostel parents got overloaded with work.•Without the hostel parents’ efforts youth hostels became impersonal places.
