Are fast pilgrims true pilgrims? The Shikoku pilgrimage

Abstract: •Western constructions of pilgrimage equate slow travel with true or authentic pilgrimages.•Yet in Japanese culture a true pilgrimage is measured in terms of rapid movement.•In the Shikoku pilgrimage pilgrims try to complete their pilgrimages as quickly as possible.•Claims tying pilgrimage to slow travel are culturally contingent with limited universal applicability.
