•Urban tourism fits for Valencia, after investing in events and facilities.•Cultural, cognitive and hedonic attitudes affect satisfaction and prescription.•Policy makers look for prescriber tourists, who undoubtedly recommend the city.•A good tourist policy is related to urban policy and the liveability of the city.
