•Shows inattention to food-phobics in tourism research.•Compares an international tourist sample to representative samples on food-neophobia.•Tourists resemble representative samples on food-neophobia.•Establishes a relation between tourist role orientation and food preferences.•Findings highlight importance of offering “safe” dishes to sizable minority of food-phobics.
