•The use of animals in tourism is hampered by global to local ethical discrepancies.•There is a knowledge gap in tourists and operators on the interests of animals.•Integrative Social Contracts Theory uses hypernorms to mediate global-local practices.•Seven hypernorms are used in building a new vision for animals used in tourism.
