Technique to harmonize Booking.com's dual rating systems

Abstract: •Booking.com changed its rating system gradually from Sept 2019 through April 2020.•This can lead to misleading results regarding the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.•We studied the level of data contamination by analysing over half a million reviews.•A generalized cleaning and estimation procedure is developed and demonstrated.•Enables study of the pandemic as well as impact of changes to rating systems
