Abstract:
•The political–tourism nexus is systematically studied using global panel data.•The cultural–political interplay on tourism demand is also investigated.•A novel dataset using UN voting records and the Hofstede Cultural Index is adopted.•Both individual choice and government intervention channels are discussed.•Distinct sets of cultural dimensions function through the two channels.
