“I want to rise above it all”: Perceptions of the neighborhood among young adults living in public housing

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore how young adults living in public housing perceive their neighborhood. Qualitative data were collected from 70 young adults living in public housing in a city in the eastern United States. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Participants reported a mix of perceptions including observations that the buildings are dirty, the neighborhood is unsafe, as well as the idea that living in the neighborhood had increased their resilience and motivation. Results imply a framework of neighborhood influencing and mitigating factors as well as effects on young adult development.
