Abstract: A systematic literature review of school reentry practices for youth impacted by the juvenile justice system was conducted. This study sought to gain an understanding of the barriers youth face during the reentry process and recommended practices that promote successful school reentry. Twenty-seven articles were identified in an initial screening and nine articles were subsequently reviewed according to inclusionary and exclusionary criteria. Five research team members generated codes through review of the articles and came to consensus on the codes in pairs. Coding and analysis were finalized during research team meetings. Based on the coding, a number of themes were identified. These themes concerned: school level barriers; individual, family, and environmental risk factors; interagency communication and coordination; comprehensive treatment; and school practices and intervention. Gaps in the literature and future directions for future practice and research are discussed.
