Sexual abuse in sport: What about boys?

Abstract: In Quebec, over 500,000 young people are involved in organized sport and the majority of these participants are boys. However, despite this high number of young males participating in sport, the issue of sexual abuse among male athletes has been mainly overlooked. Researchers who have studied sexual abuse in the context of sport have primarily focussed on female victims. And yet, some studies have shown that between 2% and 6% of male athletes have suffered sexual abuse in the context of their sport. Thus, studies currently provide very little insight into the problem of sexual abuse among boys in sport. This article presents the current knowledge on the topic and highlights the importance for the academic community to study this issue.
