•Addicts of smartphone are more found in female students than male students.•Satisfactory school life contributes to reducing smartphone addiction proneness.•Parental attachment is negatively associated with the addictive tendency of smartphone.•Motives for smartphone use are positively associated with addictive tendency of smartphone usage.
