Integration of mental health services into an innovative health care delivery model for children with chronic conditions

Abstract: Coordinated Healthcare for Complex Kids (CHECK) is an innovative health care delivery demonstration project for children with chronic conditions and is supported by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Health Care Innovation Award Round Two. CHECK integrated behavioral health care into the model of comprehensive healthcare delivery. CHECK has provided a total of 31,470 services to 5923 children and their families. CHECK has provided 12,243 mental health screenings, 18,411 preventive interventions, 7511 consultative services, 2443 direct interventions, and 3105 referral services. A significant relationship was found between type of mental health service and disease and age. Children received different types of mental health services based on their type of chronic medical condition and age. CHECK is a promising model that has the potential to inform the development of future integrated health and behavioral health care service delivery models for children and youth with chronic medical conditions.
