Abstract:
This paper analyses the effects of recommendations of consumer research organisations on relative prices. A brief analytical section outlines conditions under which recommendations are likely to influence relative prices. Then evidence is presented that influential recommendations do indeed alter relative prices. The third substantive section discusses welfare implications. It is concluded that consumer organisations should pay more attention to relative prices, especially following the publication of their recommendations.
