Abstract:
Following Bohara and Kaempfer (1991) this paper seeks to develop and test a partial endogenous model of the determination of tariff levels in Australia over the long run. In general, the findings of the paper provide empirical evidence in favour of tariff endogeneity, and in particular, support the conclusions of earlier Australian work by Anderson (1980) and Conybeare (1978) concerning the importance of average wages in explaining changes to the level of tariffs.
