Financial Literacy and Low Stock Market Participation of Japanese Households

Nobuyoshi Yamori and Hitoe Ueyama

Finance Research Letters, 2022, vol. 44, issue C

Abstract: We investigated whether low financial literacy of Japanese households causes their low stock market participation. Based on our survey, we found that high financial literacy tends to increase stock market participation. We also found that households with higher financial literacy do not necessarily have a high shareholding ratio among financial assets.
