How digital finance affects carbon intensity–The moderating role of financial supervision

Xiaohong Guo and Yongqian Tu

Finance Research Letters, 2023, vol. 55, issue PA

Abstract: The impact of digital finance (DF) on decarbonization is an emerging and hot topic. Based on the panel data of 284 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2020, this paper investigates the impact of DF on carbon intensity (CI) using spatial econometrics. The results show an inverted U-shaped relationship between DF and CI. DF has a positive spatial externality on CI, which not only has a significant effect on the local CI, but also has a positive effect on the surrounding areas. Finally, the positive effect is more obvious under reasonable financial supervision.
