Abstract: •The Indonesian Village Fund is an intergovernmental fiscal transfer that could support restoration and conservation.•We evaluate the implementation of the Green PNPM Program and the use of the Village Fund from 2015 until 2017.•We argue that the Village Fund could finance conservation and reforestation if certain design principles are incorporated.
