Abstract: Rapidly developing infrastructure networks are becoming highly interdependent/dependent. A failure in one network may influence the performance of other dependent networks, and this aggravates risks faced by infrastructure system. This study presents a new approach for assessing the vulnerability of gas pipeline-road networks caused by gas pipeline failures. The impacts of the pipeline failure are quantitatively assessed based on the gas supply areas they directly affect and the reduction in travel efficiency caused by road interruptions. This approach allows the identification of vulnerable pipeline network links that can not only have a high impact on the pipeline network but can also generate substantial impacts on the road network they affect. The methodology was applied to a part of Beijing's gas pipeline network. An integrated vulnerability map and curves were generated. These can aid infrastructure managers in demarcating high impact areas requiring particular inspections and protection.
