Airports and economic regeneration

John AW Robertson

Journal of Air Transport Management, 1995, vol. 2, issue 2, 81-88

Abstract: This article focuses on the potential of airports to aid regeneration of depressed areas rather than their more widely recognized economic impacts. The scale of employment generated can make an airport the largest single employer in a region, with most related jobs concentrated within a fairly localized area around the airport. The wide range of employment types supported by airport growth provides opportunities for less skilled workers and significant numbers of local unemployed workers obtain jobs at airports. Airports with good air services can help less buoyant areas to be short listed by potential inward investors, and there is evidence of such investment regenerating derelict sites. Airport development can also provide a vehicle for European Union funding as well as support local tourism industries, which themselves aid regeneration. Airport growth is seen by UK regeneration agencies as an aid rather than a competitor to urban regeneration.
