Are cockpit weather information systems feasible products?

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a study that examined the feasibility of cockpit weather information systems in the transport, commuter, and business market segments. It begins with a description of the general weather system characteristics that study participants identified as necessary for market success. Next, the paper analyzes the financial business case for cockpit weather systems in each market segment and finds there is a compelling case for adoption of these systems. Decision reversal tables and Monte Carlo simulation show that this business case is insensitive to changes in the cost and savings elements. Finally, it presents estimates for the maximum market penetration and adoption rates in these three aviation market segments.
