Motives for mega-alliance between US ex-trunk carriers and European flag carriers

Abstract:
This paper analyses the complementary relationships within international alliances when the core partners are a major US carrier and a European flag carrier. Comparisons of traffic volumes on route connecting the gateways suggest that there is a division of traffic where a US partner puts efforts into developing its inland hubs to link with international gateways, while the European partner secures positions as the principal operator on routes between its hub and New York.
