Gender diversity on Japanese corporate boards

Abstract: •This study provides an analysis of female directors on Japanese corporate boards.•The determinants of female inside and outside directors are significantly different.•Female outside directors lead to higher firm performance.•The stock market views the appointments of female outside directors as beneficial.
