•Participatory action research (PAR) can help identify solutions to practical problems.•PAR was used to understand how rural women experienced their entrepreneurial ecosystem.•Women's experience of their entrepreneurial ecosystem can lead them to develop concrete actions.•Findings showed the impact of socio-cultural dynamics in creating inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems.
