Abstract:
•We empirically investigate the importance of individual–opportunity alignment.•We test our hypothesis using the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics II data.•Misalignment of motivations–expectations is detrimental to the founding of new firms.•Our results indicate the role of entrepreneur-opportunity fit is significant.
