A model of a hospital anaesthetic department

Peter Smith

Omega, 1982, vol. 10, issue 3, 293-297

Abstract: Random patterns of absence amongst consultant and junior anaesthetists gave rise to problems in fulfilling all the anaesthetic department's commitments. This paper describes how dynamic programming was used to produce a timetable of anaesthetic commitments that would minimise the number of cancelled theatre sessions. The implications of various staffing strategies are also examined.
