Abstract:
This paper reports the findings of a survey of the application of OR/MS in commercial and service organisations in Hong Kong. The aims of the survey were to explore the scope and the specific areas of application, to ascertain the background and organisational placement of the practitioners, and to identify the environment in which OR/MS applications can succeed. A limited survey was also conducted to ascertain opinions held of OR/MS practitioners by the end users. The findings suggest that the use of OR/MS is developing well and along the traditional model of an analyst-client relationship. The main difficulties encountered by the practitioners appear to be communication with a lack of line authority over the user.
