A network queueing model for data communication systems

Abstract: For many companies, the manager of computer operations is required to evaluate and act on a variety of proposals for changes in their computer communications system. In order to make rational, objective decisions with regard to the dispensation of each proposal, the manager must be able to evaluate the effects the proposed change will have on the operating characteristics of the entire system. In this paper we present a model which provides the required information in the form of steady state queueing results. Specific information provided to the data systems manager includes the utilization of all hardware and communication lines in the system and the mean turnaround time for every type of job submitted throughout the system. The model was developed to meet the needs of an expanding international engineering consulting company.
