Abstract:
This article traces the development and growth of the leasing industry in Singapore, investigates various aspects of segmentation among the lessors, analyses lessors' differentiation policies, and attempts to answer the question of why lessees engage in leasing activities. Despite the industry's short history, its development has been fascinating and its growth significant. The survey reveals that lease size, primary period of lease, type of equipment, and the riskiness of business written are important indicators of segmentation among lessors. The findings also show that lessors find niches in the market with respect to origin of new business and customer loyalty. The lessees, on the other hand, consider the need for financing to be more important than its cost. They would continue to lease as long as the advantages of leasing are not replaced by other forms of financing.
