The utilization of expert systems in OR/MS: An assessment

Abstract: Expert systems technology is being productively utilized by Operations Research/Management Science professionals, both as a stand-alone consultant or assistant, and integrated with other computer-based tools used by OR practitioners for the solution of complex or unique problems. In addition, there is an increasing appearance of some ES component in decision support systems. This article assesses the current state of ES in these roles, and discusses other areas, such as tutoring and enhancing the chances of implementation of OR recommendations, in which ES can benefit the operations researcher.
