The 'optimum' number of beds in a coronary care unit

Abstract: A study of the Coronary Care Services provided in the community of Salford has been underway now for more than 3 years. The effects of the introduction of a mobile cardiac ambulance on the community and the hospital are being investigated. This paper reports on one important issue stemming from the present study namely how many beds a CCU ought to develop according to medical and operational criteria. On the one hand an excess of beds results in under-utilisation whilst on the other a lack of beds results in the treatment of some patients in the CCU being truncated.
