Abstract:
There are several important economic reasons why government has a role in environmental management. However there are also substantial informational problems that must be solved if government intervention is to be adequately directed. Traditional cost-benefit techniques are subject to some serious conceptual and empirical problems. However there are less powerful approaches which provide more feasible alternatives to environmental measurement which the authors discuss.
