Speed: the less important element of the High-Speed Train

Moshe Givoni and David Banister

Journal of Transport Geography, 2012, vol. 22, issue C, 306-307

Abstract: ► New HST services are likely to increase HST’s share, but not rail transport’s share. ► Maximum operating speed gets the headlines, but average-speed is the important speed. ► Door-to-door travel time, not station-to-station, determines passengers’ mode choice. ► Journey reliability, comfort, security, with speed, make up the journey experience.
