Abstract:
•We explored the correlates of students' campus participation decisions that may impact their social capital.•The majority agreed that their commute discourages from coming to campus and joining campus activities or events.•Commute time was negatively associated with campus participation.•Transit riders were more likely to avoid coming to campus or partake in campus activities due to commute.•Commute-related barriers to social capital were particularly prevalent in suburban locations.
