•The nexus between illegal mining practice and the Sustainable Development Goals.•Miners engaged for more than 10 years earned between US $ 102.65–128.31 monthly.•Rare usage of personal protective equipment causes frequent multiple injuries to most miners.•Only 12 % of the miners sought medical attention from the hospital when injured.•Illegal mining injuries may hinder achievement of SDGs in developing countries.
