Abstract: •Evaluate the ability of a coal-bearing deposit to generate economic rents.•Review coal mining assets and industry structure as per Porter's Model, the resource-based view, and the institution-based view.•Identify ways firms can convert a coal-bearing deposit into an economic-rent-generating asset.•Make policy implications for countries wanting to accelerate their economic development by attracting investment in the coal mining sector.
