Role of e-commerce for promoting sustainability in the mining sector

Abstract:
This investigation delves into the influence of various forms of e-commerce—namely, internet shopping, electronic banking, and mobile commerce—on the efficiency of the mining industry. Examining advanced economies such as Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US over the period from 1995 to 2019, the study confirms that a 1% increase in internet shopping volume corresponds to approximately a 0.43% uptick in efficiency. Similarly, electronic banking exhibits a positive impact on efficiency, with a 1% rise in transaction volume associated with roughly a 0.38% improvement in efficiency. On the contrary, mobile commerce demonstrates limited influence, primarily due to lower transaction volume. To enhance mining efficiency in advanced economies, policymakers are encouraged to promote specialized online shopping and mobile commerce platforms, foster the digitization of green finance, incorporate big data technologies, and support environmentally conscious inward foreign direct investment (FDI).
