The Braer incident: workshop presentation

Marine Policy, 1993, vol. 17, issue 5, 483-485
Abstract:
The workshop began with an account of the grounding of the tanker Braer on Shetland. This was followed by an account of the studies commissioned by the Ecological Steering Group for the Oil Spill on Shetland (ESGOSS); progress of these studies to date: plans for assessing the short- and long-term impact of the incident, and the strategy for monitoring change and recovery. The main debate centred on a series of reports on the effect of the spill on the marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and on the performance of the 600 strong media contingent. The lessons to be learned were identified and are embodied in a series of recommendations for action.
