Abstract:
•Mean windspeed misrepresents energy potential in regions with low wind resources.•In West Africa, overlooked evidence includes low-level jet and maximum wind regimes.•Both of those variables are analysed at high frequencies over long time series.•Different turbine hub heights and cut-in and cut-out speed thresholds are assessed.•Recommendations and limitations for windfarm planning in West Africa are outlined.
