Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2024, vol. 202, issue C

Abstract: Sustainable development is a global mission. To address the ongoing climate change is a major component of it. The global energy transition is aiming to achieve a carbon neutral economy. Reliable, clean and affordable supply of power and other energy utility services to all is critical for sustainable development. Developing decentralized hybrid energy systems may be one of the potential options for better energy sustainability. Determination of sustainability factors of such new technologies is critical in this regard. These factors may not converge to a single optimal solution for the best sustainability. Multi-criteria decision-making methods are used as the tool to decide an overall optimum sustainable solution based on these sustainability factors. This study presents a comprehensive review of published studies on different decision-making processes for sustainable decentralized hybrid energy systems. The probable future path of research is also discussed in this review.
