Abstract:
Emissions of greenhouse gases are contributing to climate change and causing global mean temperatures to rise. CO2 storage in magmatic rocks is considered a promising method to mitigate this situation. After screening and analyzing the relevant literature, this review elucidates the mechanism of CO2 geological storage in magmatic rocks. It then summarizes the storage conditions and methods, including silicate dissolution and carbon mineralization, wettability, sealing, as well as integrity, in-situ, ex-situ, and surface methods. A detailed analysis of the storage potential assessment is provided along with a discussion of the associated problems and risks. Finally, the future development directions are outlined. This study introduces the envision of maximizing dissolution and mineralization rates, explores the effect of organic acids on wettability, and proposes a potential evaluation equation that combines different methods. It also discusses the limitations and potential problems of these studies and offers recommendations for improvement. This study provides a new pathway for carbon storage and offers guidelines for research and policy development for the industry and policymakers.
